Gotei 13
The Gotei 13 are the primary military branch of the Soul Society. They are a feudalistic society, similar to the samurai class of ancient Japan. They have a very traditional, honour driven society where name and rank mean everything. Any regular soul with above average levels of Reiryoku can apply to join the Gotei 13, and if found worthy will be trained in the art of the Shinigami. They are armed with a blade known as a Zanpakutō, an extension of the Shinigami's own soul that allows them to purify corrupt souls.

The primary directive of the Gotei 13 is guarding the Circle of Transmigration. Soul Society and the World of the Living run parallel to each other. The content of souls in each realm must remain balanced, otherwise the harmony between the two realms will fall into disarray, and the dimensions will collide. Were this event to happen, both realms would be all but destroyed, and the souls that survived the collision would be stuck in a chaotic maw where life and death exist on the same plane.

In order to prevent this from happening, the Gotei 13 were formed. Their Shinigami ranks maintain the balance between Soul Society and earth. Souls that die on one world are reborn on the other. So, by removing souls from both worlds when one becomes too unbalanced, as well as purifying corrupted souls known as hollows to keep the numbers constant, the Shinigami keep the Circle of transmigration constant, and avoid this cataclysm.

Beyond this, The members of the Gotei 13 are tasked with guarding the Seireitei and the inner districts of the Rukongai within the soul society, as well as guiding trapped human souls by performing a konso, or soul burial. They also deploy Shinigami world wide to keep hollow numbers down in order to maintain the balance, as well as guard areas of note such as spiritual tipping zones and areas where the fabric between the worlds is weak.

The Gotei 13 have thirteen divisions, each with their own purpose and specialisations. They take their orders from central 46, an organisation acting on behalf of the soul king, as well as the Captain commander. Each division has a captain which leads them, and a Lieutenant who assists the captain in their duties. After the Captain and Lieutenant, each Division has four "seats" ranging from third to sixth. If an individual has not earned one of these ranks, they are known as seatless, and have no authority or power.

Rank ups inside the Gotei 13 squads are managed in several ways. Lieutenants are assigned by the Squad's Captain, as are the seated officers. These positions can be challenged for, however. To do so requires one on one combat with the individual whose position you wish to acquire. This fight cannot be lethal, and if one party desires the fight be judged it must be judged. This method does not apply to captain positions which have their own unique rules.

Captain positions are decided in three ways;

Captain Proficiency Test: An empty captain position can be obtained by passing a captain's Proficiency Test. Three captains including the captain-commander must be present for this test, and be satisfied with their ability to perform the role adequately. This requires the ability to perform a Bankai.

personal recommendation: An individual can also become a captain by obtaining personal recommendations from at least six active captains, and approval from at least three of the remaining seven. An active captain can also be forcefully retired this way, if a recommended replacement meets these requirements. This method cannot be applied to the Captain Commander.

Trial by Combat: The final way to become a captain is to defeat a captain one-on-one with at least 200 witnesses from the captain's division. This method also allows one to bypass having the mastery of Bankai or other possible abilities that a captain would otherwise be required to have knowledge of, as it allows no judgement from captains who would require those skills as a prerequisite to join their ranks. This fight must be judged, and it must be to the death.

Vandenreich
The Vandenreich are the last remaining bastion of the Quincy race. Following the Quincy massacre, only the Vandenreich battalions survived. As their members are raised under constant threat of annihilation at the hands of the Shinigami, every member of the Quincy has an inherent hatred of them. Natural warriors, the members of the Vandenreich are raised from a young age in a rank and file manner, taught the art of war from the time they can walk.

The Vandenreich has many smaller branches world wide, managing communications and giving the Quincy an active foothold in every major nation. Through these branches, they monitor the Shinigami in secret, gathering information on their movements and actions. Their main headquarters however, is known as the Schatten Bereich; a massive castle in the German wilderness. Here, the Vandenreich operates in complete safety, beyond the eyes of the Shinigami and Arrancar.

The Vandenreich use a military hierarchic, though they are ruled by a monarchy. The royal family of the Vandenreich are descendants of the original commander general of the Vandenreich; Juhabach. After all other forms of Quincy command were eliminated, Juhabach became the Emperor of the Vandenreich. After his death, his only child took his place, and the monarchy was created.

Beyond the monarchy, the Vandenreich have five branches, known as Battalions. Each of these Battalions are lead by a General. These are the Vandenreich equivalent of a captain of the Gotei 13. Each General is accompanied by a Major, the equivalent of a Lieutenant. After the general and major, each battalion has four Lieutenants, ranging from first to fourth. These are the equivalent of seated officers. If an individual has not earned one of these ranks, they are known as a Soldat, the equivalent of an unseated soldier.

Rank ups inside the Battalions are managed in several ways. Lieutenants are assigned by their Battalion's general, as is their Major. Generals are assigned by the the Emperor of the Vandenreich. If an individual Quincy desires to challenge for a position above their current rank, they must request permission for a duel from either their General if challenging for a major/Lieutenant position, or from the Emperor if challenging for a General position. If permission is granted, Judged combat between the parties in question will be initiated. These combats are refereed, and death is prohibited. If an individual is defeated and loses their position, they cannot challenge for it back for at least a real world month. The only Battalion position that cannot be earned via combat is General of the first Division, as it is reserved for the Emperor of the Vandenreich; a position handed down via a bloodline.
Tree Of Command:
First Battalion
The First Battalion are the tacticians and strategists of the Vandenreich. They don't specialize in any particular field, but are rather jack of all trades. In squads, members from the First Battalion are typically assigned logistics roles, commanding squads and running operations. When not in combat, members of this Battalion manage the affairs of the Vandenreich, helping develop new technologies and finding new ways of increasing their military might. The commander of the First Battalion is a position reserved for the Emperor of the Vandenreich.

La Legión
La Legión is the main army of Hueco Mundo, acting under direct service of the king Of Hueco Mundo. Beyond following the orders of their superiors, they have no real purpose. As they started their existence as hollows, the Arrancars that comprise the ranks of La Legión are all bloodthirsty killers. As such, standing is determined by strength and strength alone. The king of Hueco Mundo is simply the strongest individual in the land, rather than a bloodline or anything monarchical like the name would imply.

La Legión uses a numerical classification system for their rankings. The first ten numbers, 0 to 9, are the Espada. These are the strongest Arrancar in La Legión, captain class warriors that comprise the might of the army. The rankings of the Espada are simple; the lower the number, the stronger the Espada. An Espada position can be acquired easily, simply by challenging the Arrancar to a judged, death enabled fight. If the Arrancar is defeated, the individual who defeats him may either kill them or cast them out. Either way, the victor takes the position. If the Espada loses and is cast out, their number is burned off, they are given a four digit number and they can never rejoin the Espada. These individuals are known as the Privaron Espada.

Beyond the Espada, the Arrancar have no classification. They are instead simply "Números" Every non Espada Arrancar is a member of the Números, and are given a number between 10 and 999 based on when they joined the organisation. There is no significance to these numbers in terms of power.

An Espada can assign a member of the Números to become their personal servants, known as a Fracción. Each Fracción lives with their Espada master inside their respective Las Noches palace. While they do not have the authority of an Espada, all Fracción outrank Números.
